New Chelsea Elementary School opened March 27, 2000. It is the blending of two schools, Chelsea Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School. New Chelsea sits on the site of the original Chelsea Elementary School. New Chelsea has 26 classrooms, a media center, a KALL room, Distance Learning Room, computer lab, KidTracs room, a music room, an art room, combination gymnasium/lunchroom, 2 special education rooms, counselor's office, SIF office, 6 room main office suite, and teachers lounge. The school opened with 420 students and a staff of 51, by the November 5, 2000 the student body had grown to 620 and a staff to 55. The first principal of New Chelsea is Vercella Sears and assistant principal was Nedia Riley.
The original Chelsea Elementary School was a 4-room frame building,
built in 1887. It was named for Chelsea Park, a favorite gathering
place of the time. Miss Smith was the first teacher and only one
room was occupied. A red brick building was erected in 1912 as a
four room country schoolhouse, heated by fireplaces. The main building
was built in 1923. It was a three-story building with thirteen classrooms,
a combination lunchroom/gymnasium/auditorium, a library, 2 offices, and
teachers lounge. Both building were used until they were torn down to make
way for the new building.

Roosevelt Elementary School was built in 1923, at 1303 North 36th. It was named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt school was built to replace the old Kerr School at 3650 State. The first principal of Roosevelt was Miss Maude Gray. The staff consisted of six teachers who taught eight grades. In 1949 a second floor was added providing an additional six classrooms. Roosevelt was closed March 13, 2000 upon the completion of the New Chelsea Elementary School.
